City Voices Magazine post

Hi everyone. London is already one of the biggest cities in the world. It's what experts call a "megacity" – a city with more than ten million people. And that number is still growing, every year! Last month, we asked our readers: What do you think London will look like in 2050?

We loved your answers – here are our favourites.

Amara, 13, Lagos, Nigeria

I think London will have many more tall buildings. There isn't much space for new houses, so people will build "vertical villages" - small towns stacked on top of each other, with homes, shops, and parks all in one building. I imagine children playing in gardens on the fortieth floor. My city, Lagos, is growing fast too, so I understand why megacities need to build upwards.

Tomás, 14, Madrid, Spain

In my opinion, London will be much greener in 2050. At the moment, air pollution is making people ill. I think this will change because most cars will run on electricity instead of petrol, and there might be new laws that stop old, dirty cars from entering the city centre. I hope for green roofs, small parks, and clean electric buses everywhere.

Yui, 12, Osaka, Japan

I think transport will be very different by 2050. Right now, traffic in London can be really slow. But I think there might be flying taxis, driverless buses, and faster underground trains. Maybe robots will help people cross busy streets safely. I believe travelling around a megacity like London won't feel stressful anymore – it will feel exciting.

Liam, 13, Dublin, Ireland

I don't think London will change as much as people expect. I think more people will simply walk or cycle instead of using cars, which is better for the environment than flying taxis. I also believe communities will become closer, because people will get to know their neighbours better through local shops, markets, and parks near their homes.
